main Activities to do on Holbox Island
Isla Holbox has a wide variety of restaurants and bars.
Some of the most luxurious boutique hotels have restaurants within their facilities, which offer Mexican and international cuisine; while the more “casual” places (quaint restaurants with palapa roofs, where you will have your feet in the sand) are located in front of the beach or a few blocks from downtown and usually offer tacos, seafood and the local specialty, pizza Locust.
For dessert, don’t miss the opportunity to try a marquesita that is similar to a crepe but rolled up and stuffed with ingredients such as ball cheese, and hazelnut cream, among others.
In Main Square, you will find several carts that sell them.
Colorful murals adorn the wooden houses and palapas; it is worth taking the time to admire the street art while biking or shopping in Main Square.
One of the unmissable activities, when you are in Holbox, is to take the whale shark sighting and swimming tour, which visit the island’s waters every year between the months of May to September.
These harmless giant fish reach 14 meters and weigh up to 15 tons; They also live up to 100 years.
In addition to swimming with whale sharks, visitors can take an excursion to the Yalahau cenote, which according to legend is “the fountain of eternal youth.”
The cenote is one of the points visited on the Three Islands Tour, as is Isla Pajaros, which is home to more than 150 species and birds, among which the pink flamingos stand out, which can be seen between the months of April to October; and the small Isla Pasión, which is ideal for enjoying the beach due to its keys and gentle waves.
Another unique experience that Holbox offers is bioluminescence, a natural phenomenon produced by microorganisms that radiate bright, turquoise light when there is movement in the sea.
Bioluminescence can be enjoyed throughout the year but is best seen from April to August when the waters are a bit cooler.
The best places to observe this phenomenon are the beaches that are located far from the city lights: Punta Cocos and Punta Mosquito.
To appreciate the bioluminescence it is necessary to go into the sea since the lights of the island can make it difficult to observe.
If you want to take this experience to the next level, then we recommend booking a kayak tour with one of the island’s certified providers.
Holbox has the ideal conditions to fully enjoy this entertaining activity, warm and shallow waters, adequate wind currents as well as a large stretch of unimpeded beaches throughout and across.
