This kitesurfing paradise in Mexico is located northwest of the city of Cancun (2 hrs.), Holbox (‘black hole’ in Yucatecan Mayan) is a small island in the State of Quintana Roo, located on the north coast of the Yucatan peninsula.

The island is separated from the coast or mainland of Mexico by a shallow lagoon that provides a sanctuary for many pink flamingos, pelicans, and some other exotic birds and animals.

The community of Holbox Island is practically dedicated to fishing.

It is normal to see fishermen walking around town with fishing nets and their catch of the day.

All the streets of Holbox are white sand, distinctive of the Caribbean islands.

The Island is known as a virgin tourist destination because it is not a very saturated point, despite the incredible natural wonders of Holbox, access has made the island something only for connoisseurs of good tourism.

Holbox is very small, you will not appreciate any car, so it is best to walk, bike or golf carts.

You will surely be able to see pink flamingos and hundreds of birds if you walk on the west or east side outside of town.

The tourism industry is booming due to the famous whale shark tours. There are hundreds of activities to practice, such as sport fishing, turtle tours, dolphin watching, tours around the island, kayaking, paddle boarding, whale shark, and visits to Mayan temples.

Access to the island is by ferry from the town of Chiquila, just a 14-minute boat ride away.

This Island is one of the safest beaches to learn to kitesurf, ideal for taking kiteboarding classes or courses at a kitesurfing school.

The conditions are ideal for beginners, shallow water, no obstacles along and across the beach, and too many windy days during the winter months mainly.

The experts or advanced will find very good conditions when the ‘northerns’ reach speeds of 28 knots or more.

The best wind is from November to August.
